Captain Ronald G. Luce

Captain Ronald G. Luce, 27, of the U.S. Army Company C, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, was killed in Afghanistan August 2nd, 2009 while serving as a Special Forces Alpha Team Leader, when his vehicle was struck by an enemy roadside bomb, along with two of his team members. He is survived by his wife, Kendahl D. Shoemaker-Luce, and daughter, Carrie Ella Luce, in Fayetteville, NC. He is the son of Ronald G. and Katherine Luce of Wilmington, NC. He is survived by his brothers, Aaron, Nathan, Richmond, Zechariah, Ethan, Isaiah, and Josiah and his sisters, Rebekah and Havilah. He is the son-in-law of Michael and Denice Shoemaker of Philadelphia, PA. Ron was born on January 6, 1982 in Julian, CA, attended high school at Ramona High School and college at Valley Forge Military College, North Carolina State University, and graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, TN, in 2005 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and minor in Chemistry. He was commissioned in the US Army National Guard in 2002 and he participated in the Hurricane Ivan relief effort with the Alabama National Guard. Later he graduated from the US Army Airborne and Ranger schools and received his Special Forces Green Beret in May 2008. His military awards include the Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, and Special Forces Tab. Decorations include Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Device, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
